My wings for the day, a Pegasus Quantum 15-912 microlight as well as one willing pilot. To be honest I was a bit nervous about this flight - my 'wings' are normally a Boeing 747 or a 777 so this 'motorcycle of the air' was a departure from the normal for me.

Starting with the view from the road, the back of the theater screen clearly had made an eye-catching advertising hoarding. The office beneath would probably have been the ticket office and perhaps concession stand (snack bar) which would have sold hot dogs, pizza, french fries and coke. This was what made the theater profitable.

Starting with the St John's Methodist Episcopal church. This photo gives some idea of the 'big sky' nature of the area, I could turn 360 degrees and not one other building was visible. Look carefully to the left and you can see snow covered mountains, I think these are the Sangro de Cristo range.

Johnson Mesa NM
Starting with this photo which shows what appears to be an NKC-135 or EC-135 type in store with her complete cockpit section removed. I *think* she might be one of the 4950th Test Wing NKC-135A test and trials aircraft, unfortunately the removal of her nose and tail fin does not help in finding her identity. However, she could be one of the EC-135 variants though one of the types which was not too modified. An odd sight.

Now on display at the nearby March Field Air Museum F-86H, s/n 53-1304, was manufactured by North American Aviation, Columbus OH and delivered to the USAF on 8 Apr 1955. She was delivered brand new to George AFB in April 1955 to the 413th Fighter Day Group (TAC), then in November 1955 was reassigned to the 479th Fighter Day Wing (TAC), also at George AFB CA. In July 1956 she transferred to Clovis AFB in NM; this marked the end of F-86 operations at George AFB. Photo by kind permission of Rich Rentrop.

This shot was taken at Cuddeback Air To Ground Gunnery Range around 1975, these aircraft were our primary mode of transportation in and out of the range. The photo above was of the Huey landing to pick me up. Cuddeback was used primarily by the aircraft from George, but at times we had aircraft from other bases visit. I distinctly recall OV-10 and O-1's using the range, as well as F-104's. The choppers (I think we had two or three) were Vietnam era UH-1's, and were still painted in the S/E Asia color scheme. It was about a 50 minute ride each way at about 95 knots.

Empty athletic field and enlisted parking places. There is a track, football field and other multi-purpose fields. As you can see Cecil is carved out of pine trees. The brick building about a third to the right of the picture is the legal office, and the white/brick building is the Aircrew Survival Training Center. Note the empty and athlete-less field! This area was recreation for the many enlisted men who called this place home.

N.A.S. Cecil Field - Part Three
Looking out of the Operations Office window, Hangar 815. You can see, on the extreme left, the AIMD shop (a lot bigger and longer than just that little bit), Jet Road at the first intersection (now Aviation Road), and A Ave is the second parallel road, and the road going straight out from the hangar is 5th Street. The brown things where the man is standing are the rumble strips, that knocks all the rocks out of your tires before you go where the jets are. The cement slab on the left side of the road, near the gate, was the guard shack. At the bottom of the picture, in the fenced area, was an electrical transformer, now no longer there (that would explain why there was no power to the hangar). They are currently reworking the electrical supply of the hangar and slightly renovating it. As a child I used to peer down from my Dad's office, at this window, and look at this view. The parking places in the foreground were the XO's and CO's parking places. We would park there for a hard moment to say goodbye to Dad. Many memories there. In the reflection from the flash you can see me, a much older wildcat, wearing a USN sweatshirt.

A general shot of part of the base perimeter fence, that is Perimeter Road just beyond the fence. The base starts at the side of 103rd Street, in a corner, and runs for miles of fence and forest until you reach the gates. This forest is now controlled by the Forestry Department.

To reach Imber we took Imber Road which is a turning off the main road just south of the centre of Warminster. At the church - just before driving past the Army's Land Warfare Centre - we came across this sign which confirmed that the road across the Imber Army ranges was open. We pressed on, passed the Warfare Centre, then up a hill and the road became progressively worse, not a good sign as we were driving our little red Ford Ka. Visions of being stranded in potholes were already looming!
