Ghostbase
Welcome
A warm welcome to Ghostbase!

Ever since I can remember I have been interested in closed and abandoned airfields and I used to run a website called 'Ghostbase' which I started in late 2000.

I have now moved in to Fotopic so that I can cover a wider range of subjects which interest me without the hassle of creating web pages and also offer a much higher standard of photography in the future. Most of my earlier photos were 'processed' several years ago, I have about 800 images to upgrade from a low quality 800x600 format.

I admit I am an aircraft nut as well and you will find photos here from various aircraft museums and scrapyards. I have also been interested in 'ghost towns' since visiting Bodie in California in 1993 and I have started posting photos from some of these visits here as well. In recent years 'urban exploration' has become popular and all the photos I have posted on Urbex forums are contained here as well.

My site visits are normally haphazard and unplanned (with a couple of notable exceptions) and this will be apparent when you navigate my photos, this site is really a permanently unfinished project!

I hope you like the ad-hoc mess which is Ghostbase, please do rate any photos that catch your eye and I really do welcome any comments which you can easily add to the photographs.

Michael

This photo, also kindly contributed by Scott Wilson, shows F-4E 67-0327 which was photographed while Scott was based at GAFB. She proudly displays a "MiG Kill" star on her intake splitter plate. She also clearly shows the 20th TFTS "Silver Lobos" squadron badge. 67-0327 went on to be preserved at Luke AFB in Arizona.  George AFB - Phantoms!  (657)

The "two hole" F-104D Starfighter was a relatively rare machine by USAF standards with only 21 examples procured in total. All were delivered factory fresh to the 479th TFW in late 1958 and then were nominally assigned to each of the four F-104C squadrons; in reality they were operated on a separate basis. At this time the 479th TFW were still carrying the very attractive comet scheme however TAC mandated their removal in the winter of 1959 and so the "two holers" remained in plain silver or grey. When the 479th TFW converted to the F-4 Phantom a number of the F-104D's were painted in the SE Asia scheme and transferred to the 198th TFS of the Puerto Rico Air National Guard, the sole operator of the F-104C and most D models from the summer of 1967 until mid 1975. One source says that the West German Starfighter training units at Luke AFB also operated some D models as well as their TF-104Gs. Both photographs above were taken during a tour of the AMARC "boneyard" in 1987 and show the two different paint schemes that the type wore during her career. A web search suggests that 57-1332 has since been scrapped whilst 57-1320 is listed as preserved at "Jackson" but no other detail.  George AFB - Century Series Fighters  (500)
The base hospital. This was a very impressive building and still in good condition. The facilities here were designed to cope initially with all military related injuries from the air base, also more general healthcare provision for the military families who lived here as well. Many servicemen’s children were born here.   George AFB - Domestic  (498)
